Inspect the metadata a public page returns

A meta tag checker helps you review metadata already present in a page’s HTML. Enter a public URL to inspect items such as the document title, meta description, canonical URL, robots directives and Open Graph fields. This can help you compare what the page publishes with what its owner intended, especially after a template or plugin change.

How to review the findings

  • Check that the title and description describe this page rather than a site-wide default.
  • Compare the canonical URL with the preferred version of the page, including protocol, host and path.
  • Read robots directives in context before changing them; a noindex instruction may be intentional.
  • Compare Open Graph title, description and image with the preview you want people to see when sharing.

For example, if two product variations return the same canonical URL, confirm that this is the intended consolidation before changing either page. A checker can expose the value; it cannot decide which URL should be canonical. Likewise, a missing description is a reason to review the page and its search intent, not proof that the page cannot rank. Search engines may choose different result text.

What this tool does not change

The Meta Tag Checker reads the response; it does not edit tags, request indexing, set a canonical, or guarantee a search or social preview. Redirects and response headers can affect what is returned. The check does not replace an indexing review in Search Console or a site-wide crawl. Use the SERP Preview to draft result wording, and see our guide to meta descriptions for context on how snippets can be selected.

Frequently asked questions

Does a meta description set the snippet exactly? No. Search engines may use the description or select text from the page to fit a particular query.

Should I change every canonical warning? No. Check the preferred URL, page relationship and site plan with the owner before changing an indexing signal.

Can I see social metadata too? Yes, the report includes common Open Graph fields returned in the HTML. Learn how to set them in our Open Graph guide. Email unlock shows the report on this page, followed by a Download PDF option; it is not emailed and marketing consent is optional.
