Check a redirect map before implementation
A redirect map checker reviews the structure of a CSV mapping old URLs to intended destinations. It helps a team find mechanical issues in the plan before an owner installs redirects. It does not decide where a page should move: a person who understands the old content and the new site must choose and approve each destination.
Prepare and review your CSV
- Use source and destination columns, with one planned mapping per row.
- Keep a working copy of the original inventory and make the destination choice explicit.
- Upload the CSV and review missing values, malformed URLs, duplicate sources, conflicting destinations, chains and loops.
- Resolve every flagged row with the migration owner before implementation; retest actual responses after launch.
For example, if /old-services/ redirects to /services/ and that URL then redirects to /our-services/, consider mapping the original source directly to the final relevant page. If two rows assign different destinations to one source, stop and agree on the intended outcome instead of choosing one automatically. A removed page with no useful replacement may need a different decision than a redirect.
What the checker does and does not do
The tool checks CSV content in your browser and supports files up to 2,000 rows and 512 KB. It does not fetch source or destination URLs, recommend replacements, create server rules, edit your website, or prove that a deployed redirect works. Use the Redirect Checker after implementation to inspect a public URL’s actual redirect path. Start with the redirect mapping template and migration guide when the team still needs to make the plan.
Frequently asked questions
Does a clean report prove the migration is ready? No. The checker cannot assess content equivalence, destination quality, server configuration or live behavior.
Can I send every removed URL to the homepage? Choose destinations based on the visitor’s likely need. Irrelevant blanket redirects can create a poor experience.
How do I get all flagged rows? Unlock the on-page report with your email; the Download PDF option is then available. The report is not emailed, and marketing consent is optional.
