GuideA practical field guide

Create a redirect map for a website migration

A practical workflow for making a clear, reviewable decision.

Prepare

Build an inventory before changing URLs. Combine CMS pages, sitemap URLs and important landing pages. Keep URLs that do not need to change.

Review

Map each changed source to the closest useful destination. Record its owner and reason; do not send unrelated pages to the homepage.

Apply with an owner

Use the CSV checker to review duplicates, conflicts, chains and loops. Have the site owner review the destination content before implementation.

Worked example

If /old/ points to /middle/ and /middle/ points to /final/, review whether /old/ can point directly to /final/. If /final/ points back to /old/, resolve the loop before implementation.
